Reusable Crochet Water Balloons!

These are SO fun!  If you have kids (or even if you don't) odds are you have enjoyed a water balloon fight or two in your life.  A great way to have fun and cool down on a hot day but regular balloons hurt when you get hit with them and then there is the mess.  These are a great solution for all your water balloon woes.

These are machine washable, reusable again and again, and fun to play with even when dry.  My three boys have done everything humanly possible to test destroying these.  They were left in standing water for I'm not sure how many months, found in the dirt, leaves and other yard waste when raking in the fall, and frozen to the ground in the winter.  The only way they have been destroyed was an unfortunate run in with the lawn mower and that was my husband's fault!

Made with Bernat Blanket Yarn these became quite popular a couple years ago.  I tried many patterns but was not happy with how they turned out so I adjusted and made my own.  You can't substitute a different yarn for these, I mean you can, but they won't work as well.  The Bernat Blanket yarn is what holds the water so well and makes them get your opponent sufficiently soaked when hit.

Materials Used:

  • Bernat Blanket Yarn, one skein will get you about a dozen balloons with this pattern
  • 9mm crochet hook

Pattern worked in rounds:

Round 1
Start by chaining 3 and then do 6 double crochets into the first chain.  Crochet over your tail so you don’t have to sew it in later.  You should now have 7 posts.  Slip stitch the first to the last closing round 1.

Round 2
Chain 2.  Now double crochet into the top of the first stitch and back post triple crochet on the same stitch.  Repeat all around until you have 13 posts.  Slip stitch the first to the last closing round 2.

Round 3
Chain 2. Double Crochet into the top of the first stitch.  Back post triple crochet on the next stitch.  Repeat all around until you have 13 posts.  Slip stitch the first to the last closing round 3.

Round 4
Chain 2. Now we start reducing by doing a double crochet and pack post triple together.  Do the first half of a double crochet, yarn over, pull the yarn through, pull the yarn through 2, you will still have 2 loops on the hook.  Yarn over twice and begin the back post triple crochet on the next post.  This is worked normally but on the last you will pull through 3 loops. Repeat all around until you have 7 posts.  Slip stitch the first to the last closing round 4.

Round 5
Chain 1. Now do 2 single crochets into the top of each stitch.  Pull your yarn as if you were about to tie off and finish.  Cut your yarn leaving a good 6 inch tail.  Tighten your knot and then use the hook to pull your yarn down to the neck of the balloon.  Wrap the yarn around the balloon neck and tighten gently.  Tie the yarn in a knot (I use a square knot) and then cut off the excess.
Your balloon is complete!

Next time I make more of these I'll take some pictures of each round for you.  Until then let me know how it goes.  Enjoy!
